Fast Track Total Hip Replacement Study Shows Speedy Recovery After Surgery
ראה מידע נוסף..
According to a new Fast Track Total Hip Replacement protocol, patients can be discharged from the hospital within 2 days of surgery. Fast Track underwent testing in the US in response to patient requests for shorter hospital stays and the expenses of medical care. According to Lawrence V. Gulotta, MD, from the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, a screened group of patients undergoing total hip replacement can be discharged 2 days after surgery, without any increase in complications or adverse effects
SPRI Completes Study on Rotator Cuff Tear Repair

The Steadman Philippon Research Institute (SPRI), Vail, Colo, recently completed a study about the best procedures for repairing massive rotator cuff tears, according to a news release issued by the company. Results were presented at the Orthopaedic Research Society’s annual meeting, held this year in San Francisco. Led by Peter Millett, MD, MSc, director of shoulder surgery at SPRI, the study involved 20 participants who were placed into one of four groups. In three of the groups, each was treated using a single-row rotator cuff repair, a double-row repair, or an augmented double-row repair, which uses collagen bio-implants to help provide the healing tissue a secure scaffold to grow into. The fourth group consisted of examining the intact, or noninjured, condition.
Kids who get more exercise also tend to do better in school, suggests a new analysis of past studies published this week.

Playing on sports teams and having more time to run around during recess is known to be good for kids` physical health, but whether it also gives them a mental boost has been a subject of debate -- especially as schools cut physical activity time in favor of more academic test prep. The finding "just helps to continue to show the importance of exposing kids to physical activity," said Sandy Slater, who has studied recess and physical education at the University of Illinois at Chicago but wasn`t involved in the new research. "There`s obviously the long-term links between physical activity and health, but this is another reason to try to continue to keep some dedicated amount of time for physical education or recess or some other types of physical activity in the school day," she told Reuters Health.
Why Ice May Be Bad for Sore Muscles

Already, the benches in gym locker rooms and beside basketball courts are filling with 2012’s early casualties, those of us who, goaded by New Year’s resolutions, are exercising a bit too enthusiastically and developing sore muscles. Many of us will then drape ice packs over our aching muscles. But a new review article published this month in the journal Sports Medicine suggests that for sore muscles, ice is not always the panacea that most of us believe it to be and that, in some instances, it can be counterproductive
For cardiac patients, aerobic exercise (AT) and resistance training (RT) is highly recommended. In an upcoming study in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, researchers compared two resistance training regimens of different intensity in combination with aerobic exercise and determined that higher volume of resistance in combination with aerobics does not yield any additional benefits.

Investigators compared the effectiveness of RT combined with AT in nearly 300 patients who were randomly divided into two groups. Each RT session consisted of 10 different resistance exercises, and the groups performed either two sets of 12 repetitions or three sets of 15 repetitions, twice per week. Patients at the higher repetition level were performing about twice the exercise of the other group.
Short bursts of resistance exercise during the workweek—as little as 2 minutes a day—can significantly reduce neck/shoulder pain and increase strength, according to a new study presented at the Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine earlier this month.

For the study, Lars Andersen, PhD, and his colleagues in Copenhagen, Denmark, completed a randomized controlled trial of 198 office workers with neck and shoulder pain, and tenderness to palpation. The trial utilized Thera-Band Elastic Tubing with handles for an exercise routine using only one exercise for either 2 or 12 minutes. The subjects were randomly assigned to a nonexercising control group, a 2-minute exercise group, or a 12-minute exercise group. The exercise groups performed a lateral raise with the arm slightly in front of the body while using elastic tubing for resistance.
The largest stroke rehabilitation study ever conducted in the United States—featuring more than 400 patients—looked at the effects of locomotor training versus a home exercise program on walking ability in stroke patients.

Locomotor training involves having a patient walk on a treadmill in a harness that provides partial body weight support. After the patients complete their training on the treadmill, they practice walking. Previous studies suggested that these devices, also called commercial lifts or robot-assisted treadmill steppers, were effective, but this walking program had not been tested on a large scale before. The investigators of the Locomotor Experience Applied Post-Stroke (LEAPS) trial set out to compare the effectiveness of the body-weight-supported treadmill training with walking practice started at two different stages—2 months post-stroke (early locomotor training) and 6 months post-stroke (late locomotor training).
University of Calgary faculty of kinesiology researcher Elias Tomaras says the idea came to him while watching track and field sprinters warm up for a race. "If you watch sprinters, short-distance speed skaters, or cyclists before their race, they will often warm up for 1 to 2 hours, including several brief bouts of high-intensity exercise. From an exercise physiology point of view, it seemed like it might be pretty tiring."

"Our study compared a standard warm-up, with what we termed an experimental warm-up," Tomaras explains, "We interviewed a number of coaches and athletes to come up with the traditional warm-up."
